Toyota wanted to liven a car show with some retro music. The show’s producer was looking for music that evoked the musical feel of particular times: 1968, 1979, 1985, and 1992. The project had tight budgetary constraints which ruled out licensing music from those periods with which the audience would already be familiar.
What is the characteristic sound of 1968? And what will Toyota’s audience recognize as that sound? Licensing a song with which the audience is already familiar will be expensive and might not necessarily fulfill the other requirements for an auto show soundtrack. Getting just the right music for Toyota was a tricky task.
We needed to find music that evoked very specific years, that sounded nostalgic but not tired, that didn’t interfere with Toyota’s main goal of selling its cars, and that was very affordable. And, of course, we needed to do it for four distinct time periods.
Here at Musync, we know the history of music. But knowing popular music from those periods isn’t enough. We also follow modern musical trends and independent bands that interpret the sound of those eras into current, accessible tunes that capture the feel of the past.
Toyota was very pleased with our recommendations. We’re sure they sold a lot of cars. Toyota became the number 1 automaker in the world that year. Now we’re not claiming the music did it, but it didn’t hurt!
