Our Take

Vesna, which translates as “Spring” from Russian, is a duo of Alex Gaponenko and Dimitri Tchernjak. They got together in 1992 and started working in 1998. Their latest album “Snow Sences” is a typical Russian album—melancholy synth leads, modern IDM, abstract hip-hop—all wrapped together with a cinematic beat.

While there are many albums of similar description produced in Russia, “Snow Sences” is an interesting work and very high quality. And like most of these products, it’s sold well.

The album is a downtempo electronica from the very beginning to the very end. Listeners who like the format of Ru.electronic will accept it with delight. Alex and Dimitri focus on what works: simple, jazzy beats with old school synths. Not all tracks on “Snow Sences” remain for long but Dilemma, Autumn Coma, Waxen Beats, and Desert would be perfect for presenting fantastic talents from Russia in the third part of Ru.Eletronic.

Vesna was formed in the autumn of 1998 by Alex Gaponenko and Dimitri Tchernjak. Alex has been creating music since 1992. When Alex met Dimitri, who had been trying his hand as a dj, he realized how common their musical influences were. There was no interest in simply listening to music; the guys wanted to try creating it. They decided to be called Vesna (“Spring” in Russian).

Alex and Dimitri’s work can be characterized by its cinematic beat and a rather successful combination of abstract hip-hop, electro and modern IDM melancholy. They have a self-titled release on the Cheburec (meaning “meat-filled fried pastry”) electronic music label.

“Snow Sences” is a full-length US debut CD. It has the feeling that Spring is just around the corner. It’s not as much a concept album but rather a stylistic approach to Alex and Dimitri’s song writing. The album’s warm rolling beats, that would not be out of place in the K7 stable, are mixed with icy glitch-ridden textures, reminding you that Spring has not yet arrived.
