“Over The Atlantic” reinterprets the old and nearly-forgotten proto-Britpop hits. This is a two-man New Zealand band—Bevan Smith and Nik Brinkman. Both started their careers in music very young. They are talented and have a following all over the world. Their work can be characterized as indie pop, electronic, dreamy pop, or laptop pop. The sound is warm, gentle, and cute. The songs are catchy with lyrical sincerity.
This album sways between light, programmable pop and lush, analog guitar buzzes. The work’s accessibility is its best attribute: simple electro-pop grooves, accentuated by a touch of atmosphere. The occasional electric guitar hooks form a strong backdrop for unobtrusive, multi-layered vocals, and lovesick lyrics.

“Over The Atlantic” is a New Zealand duo. Bevan Smith is the producer and electric guitar sound of the band, while Nick Brinkman works his laptop. While both have been writing songs and performing since high-school days, the partnership brought more depth and style to their work. They have performed to enthusiastic audiences all over the world: UK, USA, Japan, and of course New Zealand.
Prior to joining Nik Brinkman, Bevan Smith started his own music label: Involve. He was born to release records, his own and those of this friends. His previous work as Aspen, Signer, and one half of Skallander showcases his talent for warmth and clarity flowing throughout the recordings. The work has been Signer-fied, if you will.
When Nik Brinkman was 17, he wrote “Drift”, earning his high school band Ejector the bNet nominations for “Best New Band” and “Best Unreleased Song”. Ejector broke up a few years later, but Nik continued writing and recording on his computer.
Bevan and Nik met while working on a local compilation. They decided to make an album together, but they struggled with the choice of music style. They finally settled on simply working on the best songs they had. The final result is a sound that references producers such as Tchad Blake, Peter Gabriel, Kevin Shields, and Brian Wilson.
