Our Take

Lullatone is a popular music group based in Nagoya, Japan. Their music is characterized by an innocent, child-like quality and spare, lo-fi sounds. Although the group refers to their style of music as “pajama-pop,” it is commonly included in such musical subgenres as Twee pop, Indie pop, and Electronica. It draws influence from diverse sources: Bossa Nova, French pop music of the 1960s, children’s songs, and Musique concrète.

Lullatone music would be great in high-end TV spots featuring electronic products. We would also recommend them to indie filmmakers.

Lullatone Members Shawn James Seymour and Yoshimi Tomida

Lullatone is a duo: Shawn James Seymour and Yoshimi Tomida. It started as Shawn’s project making lullabies for Yoshimi. To date, Lullatone has recorded four albums. They use a tiny toy orchestra, a junior high school girl chorus, and even bass drum sounds made from a real pillow recording!

Over the last two years, all songs were recorded in duo’s converted bedroom studio in Nagoya, Japan. To enhance the soft “recording in the house” sound, some albums were pre-mastered onto a vintage cassette 4-track machine for that extra analogue magic. Lullatone sticks with cute, minimalist melodies underneath the whispery vocals of Yoshimi. There are songs for going to sleep, waking up, sitting around on a Sunday afternoon, cooking breakfast, or just daydreaming. Shawn James Seymour and Yoshimi Tomida managed to create a new type of conceptual pop music.

Let yourself float away with the pajama pop stylings of Japan’s sensational slumber party music makers. Or have a pajama party with the Lullatone!
