Our Take

Lisa Papineau’s music features electronic, experimental, rock, alternative dance, and haunting trip hop sounds with a sexy voice. She has done guest vocal work for M83 and Air. Papineau takes the time to explore texture and timbre as much as expressive lyricism, and the results are consistently engaging.

Papineau’s record, “Night Moves,” is full of shadowy maneuvers, navigating shifting emotional territory that requires an artistic guide. Although this debut solo effort has some patches that are a bit flat, Musync is excited to see and hear where she wants to go next. Woman’s got imagination!

We highly recommend Lisa Papineau’s music for sultry summer nights, hypnotic beats, and seductive vocals. We would be happy to work with you to find how her sound would enhance your project.

Lisa Papineau Portrait

Born in Providence Rhode Island, Lisa Papineau was raised in the respective wilds of Massachusetts and Vermont. Papineau packed up on a whim and moved to Los Angeles. Working with such groups as Fizgig, FKA and SissyBar, she then began a collaboration with the composer Tyler Bates which resulted in an album: “Pet. Coming.” It was released to a great deal of critical success and brought the group a wider following.

After the break up of the group, Papineau co-produced the film “Treasure Island.” Directed by Scott King, the film was awarded the Special Jury Prize for “Creative Vision” at the Sundance Film Festival.

In 2004, Papineau moved to Paris and began to write the songs that were to be the body of her album “Night Moves.” Collaborating with the French musicians Thomas Huiban and Matthieu LeSenechal, Papineau spent a good deal of time experimenting with ways to strip the lush melodies down to their barest-boned minimal. “Night Moves” enjoyed an initial limited run in France and made its debut in the USA in July 2006, on LunaticWorks (Sony/BMG).

Returning back to the US in 2007, Papineau was hard at work on several projects. In the Spring, Big Sir released their second studio album entitled “Und Die Scheiße Ändert Sich Immer” with GSL Records. The album featured an eclectic range of guest performers, including Money Mark Ramos-Nishita, Jonathan Hischke from Hella, and Adrián Terrazas of The Mars Volta. Papineau also completed three tracks with The Anubian Lights for their newest project and recorded a live album with Bron Tieman’s Crooked Cowboy. Soon to be released, the Japanese composer Jun Miyake’s “Stolen From Strangers” features Papineau’s contributions to vocals and lyrics for two tracks.

Papineau is just now put the final touches on her second solo venture, “(Red) Trees,” which will be released this year. This project features vocals by singers/songwriters Matthieu Boogaerts and Mark Eitzel of American Music Club, cover artwork by Italian painter Andrea Mastrovito, video art by Raphaël Neal, and a very loud organ from St. Géraud’s church in Aurillac France.
